How to select the device that’s right for you

Getting Started

Whether you know exactly which device and model you are after, or have never bought online before, it is worth taking a minute to run through this checklist to ensure you to buy the product that’s right for you.

The good and the bad

Assuming you’ve got a device already, think about how you interact with it. Consider what you use it for most on a daily basis. What does your current phone do that you love and where does it let you down?

More than anything else, what do you want your new device to be able to do? Take really great photos? Have a long battery life? Perhaps you want a phone that is very robust and ruggedised, or one that has a good quality music player.

Shop around

If you are not sure which device is right for you, perhaps a good place to start would be to browse our current selection. Each device includes a “View details” link, where you will be able to find out more about the key features and specifications, as well as view images of the device. For certain models, there is also an interactive 3D function that enables you to examine the device from all angles to confirm whether it suits your needs.

Here are some additional considerations:

Look and feel

Is how the device looks more important to you than how it functions? Do you see your device as a status symbol?

Sizing

Check out the dimensions of the devices on offer. Will it slip comfortably into that top pocket or into your every day handbag?

Key Features

We’re all different and we all use our devices in different ways, so what features can’t you live without: radio? MP3 player? Instant Messaging? Use O2’s Mobile Guide to filter the devices that have the features which are important to you. Simple things like how long the battery lasts between charging might be equally important.

Listen to Others

If you’re not an experienced mobile user then take some advice from those that claim to be. By reading the Mobile Reviews here you can get much more informed on the strengths and weaknesses of the various devices. Take a peek at the Customer Forum here to see how other mobile users are getting on with their devices.

Pay & Go or Pay Monthly

The tariff conundrum: Pay Monthly versus Pay & Go... this choice comes down to your average monthly calling, texting and data usage. As a general rule of thumb, if you spend more than £15 per month topping up, then Pay Monthly may work out cheaper. However, some customers prefer Pay & Go or simplicity tariffs, as there is no lengthy contract. See our Frequent Questions section to increase your understanding of O2’s range of tariffs.

Manufacturer Loyalty

If you’ve experienced a number of devices before which one did you prefer? Alternatively if you’ve always had Nokia devices, for example, the user interface is more likely to be familiar to you and you may struggle to adapt to another type.

Snap Happy

If you never use the camera function on your phone then a device with a high-spec camera may be unnecessary. If you’re always capturing memories then think about what types of image you like to capture as some devices have additional capabilities such as flash, night mode and zoom.

Nearly There?

Once you’ve got a clearer idea, and if Pay Monthly seems the right way to go, you can use the O2 Package Builder to compare devices and tariffs with different contract lengths to get the right deal for you. Good luck and if you get stuck at any time just gives us a call on 08442 02 02 02 and we’ll do what we can to help.
